Monaco – Carlos Sainz fuhr im Eröffnungstraining zum Formel-1-Grand-Prix von Monaco auf dem berühmten Stadtkurs die schnellste Zeit. Der spanische Ferrari-Pilot überflügelte seinen Landsmann Fernando Alonso vom Team Aston Martin um 338 Tausendstelsekunden.
Dritter wurde mit einer Distanz von 663 Tausendstel der siebenfache britische Weltmeister Lewis Hamilton von Mercedes, knapp vor Vorjahressieger Sergio Pérez von Red Bull. Der Teamkollege des Mexikaners, der zweimalige Champion und Weltmeisterschaftsführende Max Verstappen aus den Niederlanden, wurde nur Sechster und war mit der Abstimmung des Autos nicht zufrieden.
